Balance the High & Low

The pitch of a sound (how high or low it is) initiates different responses from babies. How you use your voice can affect the energy level of playtime with your baby! Exposure to high sounds plays an important part in maintaining the alertness & energy needed for learning, then low sounds can be calming and soothing for when it's time to relax.

This week, try to use a wide variety of voice ranges when you talk to your little one. Integrate movement too - move your body from low to high as you make a low to high sound! Say poems & tell stories using your voice in different ways, sing songs which are high and low, and see how your baby responds :)

Feel free to post their responses here, along with any wonderful ways you can think of to explore high & low!

  1. My music idea is home made maracas.

Empty water bottle + handful of almonds + duct tape around the opening = happy shaker

Using different nuts and grains make different noises, and it is great to have a use for all those old pump bottles!

  2. I do something similar with a Berocca container. I put a little macaroni or rice in it then glue the lid on with instant glue. It's the perfect size for little hands to hold (and mouths to chew...).

  3. A couple of fun things we've been doing this week are tickling Jarvis from his toes up to his head, making a low sound to start with & sliding up to a high squeak at the end, he laughs himself silly!!

I also stand above him, make a high 'weeeeee' sound and put my arms up in the air, then swoop down to tickle him & make my voice slide down to a low sound by the time I'm bending right over him :)
